Cookies
vid— a random ID that tells us you're the same visitor when you come back. It lets us count unique visitors and apply the daily look-up limit. It lasts one year.cookie_notice— remembers that you closed the cookie notice.admin_session— only set if a site administrator signs in.
There are no advertising or third-party tracking cookies.
What we record
For each look-up we store the name you searched, the time, your visitor ID and your IP address. We use this to count visitors and look-ups, and to stop any one person from making too many new look-ups: each visitor can ask for up to 20 names that haven't been looked up before in any 24-hour period. Names already in our database are unlimited.
Where answers come from
New names are sent to Anthropic's Claude to explain them; only the name itself is sent, nothing about you. Answers are saved so the next person gets them instantly. They may contain mistakes, and an editor may review and correct them.
